If you mean a modern book collecting old fairy tales I don’t know. There are new versions and variations of the Grimm collections every year, it seems. But if you mean newer fairy tales or adaptations of old fairy tale themes, I can suggest a few things. The Oxford Book of Modern Fairy Tales collects fairy tales written between 1839 and 1989 and is an excellent resource. Tanith Lee has an excellent book called “Red as Blood, or Tales from the Sisters Grimmer” of original short stories, and a novel “White as Snow” loosely based on Cinderella. Her “Secret Books of Paradys” and “Secret Books of Venus” I thru IV are really original fairy tales, set in fictional versions of Paris and Venice, respectively. Ellen Datlow and Terry Windling have edited several volumes of “fairy tales for adults” that are usually based on traditional stories; two of the more recent ones are Black Heart, Ivory Bones and Ruby Slippers, Golden Tears.

“and they all lived happily ever after.” Crap and mush. It must have been responsible for millions of divorces when the women involved did not find that their own prince charming did not live up to the fairy tale ideal.
