1) ‘The Wizard of Oz’ (1939).  In this fantasy picture a young Judy Garland plays Dorothy, an orphaned youngster who goes to live with her aunt and uncle in Kansas.  She runs away with her dog Toto, finds herself in a tornado, and ends up confused in Munchkinland.  After receiving advice from the good fairy Glinda, Dorothy befriends a Tin Man, a Scarecrow, and a Cowardly Lion and they embark on a journey to Emerald City.  The most famous line is near the end of the film when, eyes closed, Dorothy repeats, “There’s no place like home,” while tapping together her red ruby slippers.    

2) ‘Gone with the Wind’ (1939).  This epic tale consistently ranks among the best movies made.  It takes place during the Civil War, and has a distinctly Southern perspective.  Scarlett, enamored with her sister’s husband, runs into one problem after another as she searches for financial security and a way to conserve her home.  The line “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn,” leaves Scarlett alone but determined to continue at the end of the film.

3) ‘The Godfather’ (1972).  This crime drama, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, revolves around an Italian American gangster family.  The ensuing violence between mob families is epitomized in the now famous line “I’m going to make him an offer he can’t refuse.”

4) ‘Star Wars’ (1977).  The first film created was episode four, which was followed by five and six.  Two decades later special editions of these movies were shown in theaters. Three prequels were then released, episodes one – three, and the last two were filmed using high definition digital cameras.  The most famous line, ‘May the force be with you,’ is used colloquially in many situations.  For example, it might be said to wish someone luck before a sports event, an important exam, or any challenging situation.  

5) ‘Casablanca’ (1942).  This movie classic, which takes place during World War II before the US involvement, is full of romance and intrigue.  Rick, played by the great Humphrey Bogart, must decide how to react when he encounters his former love Ilsa, played by Ingrid Bergman, who is married to a resistance leader.  The love still felt by Rick for Ilsa is expressed in his toast, “Here’s looking at you, kid,” repeated multiple times. Another well-known line is stated by the corrupt Capitan Renault, who orders his men to “Round up the usual suspects” every time a crime is committed.
